GATSBY WEDDING WARDROBE

By LaFleur Magazine

Wardrobe of the roaring '20s was elegant, extravagant and modern. Style for both men and women captured the moment with elegance. Re-create the look of the era for your Gatsby-inspired wedding.

When planning a Great Gatsby or roaring '20s themed wedding, the first styling decision will be what type of wardrobe you envision. Are you dreaming of Old-Hollywood glamour with timeless detail, or a modern Art Deco affair doused in black, gold, and over-the-top drama? Are you dreaming of something in-between? The look of the day will be created by the wedding details beginning with wardrobe for the bride, groom, and wedding party.
Silhouettes for women ranged from dropped-waisted gowns and "belted" looks, to shorter lengths hitting just-below-the-knee, with the bust flat and often beaded necklines. If you like the look of the era, but with a modern twist, opt for beaded, swanky bridesmaids dress hemmed just above-the-knee. Head scarves and vintage jewelry finish off the look.

Catherine Martin, set designer and costumer for The Great Gatsby hit film, sheds light on the look for women. She styled gowns for the actresses with silhouettes of the entire decade, which allowed diversity and modern creativity. By 1920, just about any silhouette, from bias cut to a strapless, to a robe de style had been invented. We often think of '20s style as shift dresses and beaded, dropped-waisted looks with embroidered fringe, although wardrobe options for women varied. Wardrobe included one shouldered gowns, beading, embroidering, harem pants, feathered skirts, halter necks, v-necks, dropped waists with influences as far as Egypt.
When planning a Gatsby-inspired wardrobe, think about understated style. It isn't necessary to wear a vintage gown or plan a wardrobe that appears overdone. A classic wedding gown can be perfect for the occasion, particularly if styled with intricate lace, a plunging back, beading or vintage detail. A form-fitting silhouette with embroidery and beaded trim is the perfect look for the occasion. Pale pinks, off-white, canary yellow, light sage, champagne, slate grey, and black are just some options of the color range.

Play up the look with accessories to accent the wardrobe, including elaborate hair accessories such as beaded headbands, embellished scarves, or feathered fascinators. Chandelier earrings and long strands of pearls are also a simple touch for classic gowns. Beaded clutches make a statement and are thoughtful and convenient for bridesmaids gifts.
