DECORATING WITH MODERN FARMHOUSE HOME DECOR

By LaFleur Magazine

Decorating a home in modern farmhouse style is all in the details. To create a farmhouse look, mix new and old items. Patina from old metals, rustic and vintage pieces, adds depth and lends to the simple, rustic and weathered signature style of farmhouse décor.
To create the modern farmhouse look, you will be intentionally mixing old and new pieces for character and charm.

New pieces also add to modern farmhouse style, especially when made to look old. New metal chairs, with distressing in just the right places, look weathered and contribute to a modern farmhouse style. Keep in mind, when mixing in new pieces, look for distressing such as scuffed and chipped paint to make a piece look vintage.

Barn wood is also a great statement piece for creating a weathered look full of charm. Shop around your local vintage stores and fixer upper style boutiques that may carry the latest Magnolia Market or other farmhouse style pieces.

Modern farmhouse style combines old and new in a purposeful way where older pieces lend character and create the rich, lived-in feeling. Going out to local boutiques and online shopping to find pieces can be fun and a great way to connect with friends. Why not plan a vintage shopping spree with friends, or better yet, plan a tour to visit all of the local shops in your state.

Here are a few tips for styling a room in modern farmhouse style:

LAYERING PIECES

Layering pieces adds character and creates decorating impact that will showcase the look you are creating. For farmhouse decorating, layer old boxes, crates, books, wool blankets and fabrics such as buffalo plaid that are on trend. Mix in a new candle in vanilla, pumpkin spice or seasonal flavor to lend to the overall cozy feeling you are after.

DECORATE WITH BARN WOOD

Barn wood is a gorgeous decorating secret as it contributes loads of rich texture and character, contributing to a farmhouse look. Finding rare pieces of barn wood can be the single most important element of successfully decorating a farmhouse look. If you mix in real, vintage barn wood pieces with modern and new pieces, you will accomplish the overall statement you are after. Many artisans use old barn wood to make frames for new chalkboards or prints. Barn wood arrows, crates, boxes, and shelves are pretty easy to find and make a huge impact.

WHITE PUMPKINS

In fall months, white pumpkins lend to the signature farmhouse look. Most grocery stores and pumpkin patches are carrying many variations of the white pumpkin. Pick up varying sizes and looks to create depth and character for your holiday tables, corner shelves to make s seasonal statement, or line window boxes with layers of pumpkins for added depth.

COTTON STEMS & COTTON GARLAND

Decorating with cotton stems and cotton garland is recommended for attaining a farmhouse look. Higher quality cotton resists wear and tear and looks so elegant along natural woods and barn wood. Tie with natural grasses or add to vases with other variations of dried flowers for an elegant centerpiece arrangement to coordinate with your other pieces.

BOXES & CRATES

Layer wood crates and boxes in corners of rooms, under larger pieces of furniture, along stacked shelves and book cases to create depth and interest throughout the space. Modern farmhouse style is created with thoughtful pieces that mix the old with new. Small details such as white pumpkins can be added to a vintage box or create to add a seasonal touch and lend to your decorating theme.
